Oliebollen, often referred to as Dutch doughnuts, are a traditional treat in the Netherlands, especially popular during New Year's Eve. They are sweet, deep-fried dough balls, usually studded with raisins or currants. Here's a basic recipe for making Oliebollen:

Ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 500ml warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 7g dry yeast
  • 50g sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 200g raisins or currants (optional)
  • Zest of 1 lemon (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Oil, for deep frying

Instructions:

1.     Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk.
    • Add the flour, sugar, salt, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix well to form a smooth batter.
    • If using, add the raisins/currants and lemon zest. Mix until evenly distributed.
    • Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it has roughly doubled in size.

2.     Fry the Oliebollen:

    • Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 190°C (375°F).
    • Once the oil is hot, use two spoons or an ice cream scoop to form balls of dough. Carefully drop them into the hot oil.
    • Fry the oliebollen in batches, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
    • Remove the oliebollen with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels.

3.     Serve:

    • Dust the oliebollen with powdered sugar while they are still warm.
    • Enjoy them fresh for the best taste.
